Aurora borealis!

We’ve been watching the aurora forecast from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Geophysical Institute each day.  So when we saw the aurora forecast as moderate/active and weather forecast as clear last night, we got pretty excited!  At ~4:30 AM, Dave woke up Kyle and I up saying that he had seen the aurora overhead from our hut.  We all hopped in the truck and headed out to Point Barrow (the furthest point away from town on plowed road).  The aurora was pretty cool!  To our eyes, it looked like gray streaks, mostly overhead because we are so far north (320 miles north of the Arctic Circle).  In the photographs, they show up as green streaks!  On the quick ride home we even saw a white Arctic fox running across the snow!

Tail lights from the truck!

Looking upward - aurora borealis with the big dipper and north star!

    1. It was absolutely amazing! We saw even stronger northern lights on the way to the lab last night, but they disappeared by the time I got back outside with my camera!
